The 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games presents women cricketers with the opportunity to compete for medals instead of the usual trophies. Former Indian cricketer Anjum Chopra believes that the inclusion of cricket in the Commonwealth Games is extremely important for the sport.

Harmanpreet Kaur will lead the team against opponents such as Barbados and Australia.

CHOPRA BELIEVES THE CWG INCLUSION WILL BE IMPORTANT FOR CRICKET AS A SPORT

As cricket is trying to reach the global stage, inclusion in multi-sport events is necessary for Chopra’s opinion. As most nations participating in the Cricket World Cup will participate in the event to be held in Birmingham, she believes the sport would be presented in its totality.

“Also, the more competitive cricket that the girls play, it will always help. We talk about exposure in international sport – exposure at this level – when you know there is a medal at stake and not a trophy – I am pretty certain that if you are a part of a set-up where you can earn a medal and you win a medal even if you come third, I am sure there is a difference in the approach as well,“ she commented on Times of India Sportscast.

SHE THINKS HARMANPREET KAUR WOULD LEAVE NO STONE UNTURNED TO LEAD HER TEAM TO SUCCESS

Chopra also commented on the possibility of India reaching the knockouts. She does not want to put added pressure on captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who she believes is one of the most professional cricketers in the world today. Chopra thinks it is important for Harmanpreet to lead by example.

“Harmanpreet Kaur will leave no stone unturned to make sure that the team gets the success required. She knows that it hasn’t been an easy ride for her to reach this position in the Indian team and she knows how she is regarded internationally as a cricketer, so I am sure she is going to get that extra zeal from the team,” She added.
