Amit Panghal, Sumit, Ananta reach Thailand Open final

The Indian contingent saw three pugilists- Amit Panghal, Sumit Kundu and Ananta Pralhad securing the berths to the final round of the ongoing Thailand Open Boxing Tournament 2022 taking place in Phuket, after sailing through their semifinal clashes on Friday. Amit, Sumit and Ananta all have secured at least a silver for India at the tournament in the 52 kg, 75 kg and 74 kg categories respectively. However, the other trio of Manisha (57kg), Pooja (69kg) and Bhagyabati Kachari suffered losses in their last four bouts and settled for bronze.

Amit, the 2019 boxing world championship silver medallist who is having his first tournament since the Tokyo Olympic Games last year, produced a dominating performance against Tran Van Thao, defeating the Vietnamese opponent via unanimous decision.

Sumit Kundu outperformed Ayatulla Takiz of Kazakhstan in his 75 kg semifinal bout, while Ananta booked the women’s 54 kg summit clash ticket after whitewashing Vietnam’s Bui Tron Thai to a 5-0 victory.

Both Manisha and Pooja, meanwhile, went down 1-4 against Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Irma Testa and Baisin Manikon respectively, along with Bhagyabati was outboxed to a 0-5 margin by Filipino pugilist Hergie Bacyadan.

While the advancement of Amit, Sumit and Ananta to the finals have assured India three silvers, Manisha, Pooja and Bhagyabati’s losses in the semis added three bronze medals to the contingent. In the last edition of the Thailand Open in 2019, India had bagged a total of one gold, four silver, and three bronze. The gold medals at the tournament this year are carrying prize money of USD 2,000 each, while those clinching silver and bronze will earn USD 1,000 and USD 500 respectively.
