In a heart-wrenching turn of events at the Paris Olympics 2024, three Indian athletes faced early exits, leaving a nation in collective disappointment. Amit Panghal, a two-time Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medalist entered the ring with high hopes. However, Zambia’s Patrick Chinyemba proved to be a formidable opponent.

Amit Panghal disappoints

Despite Panghal’s previous victory against Chinyemba, this time, the Zambian’s height advantage and quick footwork kept the Indian boxer at bay. The sting-and-flee strategy worked in Chinyemba’s favour, leading to a 4-1 split decision against Panghal. Amit Panghal’s journey ended prematurely, but his resilience and determination remain an inspiration.

Jaismine Lamboria (Women’s 57kg Boxing):

Jaismine Lamboria, a Commonwealth Games bronze medalist, stepped down to the 57kg category after India lost the quota in the 60kg division. Facing Nesthy Petecio of the Philippines—a silver medalist from Tokyo 2020 and former world champion—Jaismine struggled to connect her punches. Petecio’s raw speed and agility secured her a unanimous 5-0 decision victory. Despite her efforts, Jaismine’s Olympic dream was cut short, leaving her with valuable lessons and unwavering determination.

Preeti Pawar (Women’s 54kg Boxing):

The 20-year-old Indian, Preeti Pawar, had a promising start, defeating Vietnam’s Vo Thi Kim Anh in her opening bout. However, her pre-quarterfinal match against Colombian Yeni Arias proved to be a closely fought contest. Arias, a silver medalist at the world championships, edged out Preeti by a narrow 3-2 split decision.

Preeti’s exit leaves India with three active boxing challenges in Paris 2024: Nikhat Zareen (women’s 50kg), Lovlina Borgohain (women’s 75kg), and Nishant Dev (men’s 71kg).
