Indian freestyle wrestler Aman Sehrawat has etched his name in the annals of wrestling history by clinching a silver medal at the Polyak Imre and Varga Janos Memorial 2024 wrestling tournament, held in Budapest, Hungary.
Aman Sehrawat’s commendable perofrmance
Sehrawat, who competes in the 57kg category, showcased an impressive performance throughout the tournament. He started his journey with a resounding 11-1 victory over Roberti Dingashvili of Georgia in the quarter-finals. His semi-final bout was against Aryan Tsiutryn, a 2021 world championships bronze medallist. Sehrawat dominated the match, securing a 14-4 win and paving his way to the final.
In the final, Sehrawat faced Rei Higuchi of Japan, a former world champion and Rio 2016 Olympics silver medallist. Despite a valiant effort, Sehrawat was defeated 11-1 by Higuchi, who also won a silver medal at the world championships last year.
This tournament holds significant importance as it is the final wrestling ranking series before the Paris 2024 Olympics. The points earned by the wrestlers at this meet will determine their rankings, which will eventually decide the seeding of the wrestlers who have secured an Olympic quota for the upcoming Summer Games.

Sehrawat, a 2022 Under-23 world champion and the 2023 Asian champion, is the only male wrestler from India to participate in this tournament. The 20-year-old Indian wrestler secured a Paris 2024 Olympics quota for India through the World Olympic Wrestling Qualifiers in Istanbul, Turkey last month.
India has secured a total of six quotas – five in women’s wrestling and one in the men’s freestyle – for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Other Indian wrestlers, including Antim Panghal, Vinesh Phogat (50kg), and Anshu Malik (57kg), who have also secured Olympic quotas, will compete in the Budapest ranking series in the following days.
