He is also a human being: Steve Smith stands behind Virat Kohli’s paternity leave

Former Australia captain and one of the finest cricketers in recent time Steve Smith has supported Indian captain Virat Kohli on his decision to return home so that he could stay with his wife, Anushka Sharma for the birth of his first child in January 2021. He also said that the absence of Virat Kohli will impact on the visitors in the last three Tests but he also stressed that Kohli also has a life outside the cricket.

Notably, Virat Kohli will lead the team in the first Test which will begin from December 17 in Adelaide. However, it’s going to be the first pink-ball Test for the Men In Blue in Australia. After the game, he will be back to India on paternity leave, which has been granted by the BCCI.

“No doubt, it’s a big loss for India. Virat is a world-class player. I think you got to give him some credit, we all know how much he loves playing in Australia. But he is also a human being. He has got a life outside of cricket, a family that is starting,” Steve Smith said to the press on Thursday.

“Credit to him for wanting to be there for the birth of his first child. We know how much he loves playing in Australia, how good he is, but as I said, credit should go to him for wanting to be there,” he further added.

On the other hand, Kohli’s unavailability has already become a matter of debate in the cricketing circle. In Kohli’s absence, vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane will lead the side and the Team India will try to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as well. However, Rahane recently showed his sublime form with a stunning hundred against Australia A during the three-day practice game in Sydney.

Meanwhile, the Indian Team wouldn’t get the service of their key speedster, Ishant Sharma, as he sustained an injury during the IPL 2020 and currently has been going through his rehab. And, Steve Smith said that the absence of Sharma would be a major concern for India.

“Ishant Sharma is probably a big loss for them at the start if he’s not available… He’s obviously played a lot of cricket. Maybe without him, it may not be the strongest. I’m sure they would like him to play,” Steve Smith concluded.
