Hosts England and New Zealand featured in the most thrilling world cup finals in tournament’s 44 year old history at the mecca of cricket Lords on Sunday. The match ended in a tie after 100 overs as both the teams scored 241 in their allotted quota of overs and even the super over succeeded in a tie . However, Eoin Morgan’s men lifted the world cup as they had scored more boundaries.
Not many were convinced with the rule , but rules are rules and have to accepted. Even before the match ended in the way it ended there was a lot of confusion as to what happened on the fourth ball of the final over which was being bowled by Trent Boult. Ben Stokes was on strike with Adil Rashid on the other end, Stokes hit the ball on the on-side and ran for two. Martin Guptill was the fielder and as he threw the ball in, it hit Stokes who gave a dive to complete the second run. The deflected ball went for four overthrow runs and the umpire awarded England six runs for that. They needed to score just three off the last two from therefrom.
During the Press conference, Eoin Morgan was asked whether it was the “luck of an Irishman” got England over the line. He smiled and said ” We had Allah on our side”.He also added that “I spoke to Adil. He said Allah is definitely with us. It’s the rub of the green. It’s also reflective of our team; we’re a diverse side and we brought that together today,”.
Morgan was proud of the way his team played and took pride in the cultures the players came from.
