The Candidates 2024, a prestigious chess tournament, is witnessing a record of participation from the Indian contingent. Five of the 16 players are Indians, marking a new era for Indian chess.

Indian Participants in Candidates 2024

  1. R. Praggnanandhaa: Qualified as the 2023 World Cup runner-up.
  2. Vidit Gujrathi: Qualified as the 2023 Grand Swiss winner.
  3. D. Gukesh: Qualified as the 2023 FIDE Circuit winner.
  4. R. Vaishali: Qualified as the 2023 Women’s Grand Swiss winner.
  5. Koneru Humpy: Qualified as the best by rating on January 1, 2024.

Format of the Tournament

Both the Candidates and the Women’s Candidates are double round-robin tournaments. Each player plays the rest of the field twice in a total of 14 rounds. Players get 1 point for a win, ½ point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. The two categories – Open and Women – have eight competitors who will face each other twice in a double round-robin format over 15 days. The one who will have the most number of points after the 14 rounds will be the champion.

Schedule of the Tournament

The tournament is scheduled to happen in Toronto, Canada from April 4 to April 22. Here are some key matches involving Indian players:

  • Round 1: April 4 – Alireza Firouzja (FRA) vs R. Praggnanandhaa (IND), D. Gukesh (IND) vs Vidit Gujrathi (IND), Vaishali Rameshbabu (IND) vs Humpy Koneru (IND).
  • Round 2: April 5 – Hikaru Nakamura (USA) vs Vidit Gujrathi (IND), R. Praggnanandhaa (IND) vs D. Gukesh (IND).
  • Round 3: April 6 – D. Gukesh (IND) vs Ian Nepomniachtchi (RUS), Vidit Gujrathi (IND) vs R. Praggnanandhaa (IND).

The winner of each category will progress to the pinnacle chess event, the World Championship to challenge the reigning world champions Ding Liren (Open) and Ju Wenjun (Women’s Candidates) of China.

Streaming Information

The live streaming of the Candidates 2024 will be available on the FIDE YouTube channel. As of now, there has been no official announcement for the broadcasting of the Candidates 2024 in India.
