Mirabai Chanu, the celebrated Indian weightlifter, has made a triumphant return to the sport after a six-month injury layoff. Her comeback was marked by a strong performance at the IWF World Cup in Phuket, Thailand. Despite not being at her best, Chanu managed to finish third in the women’s 49kg category.

Chanu’s journey back to the ramp was not easy. She had suffered a hip tendonitis injury at the Asian Games, which had kept her away from the sport for six months. The rehabilitation process was tough and demanding. However, with the support of everyone involved in her rehab and recovery, Chanu pushed through all the complications.

Her performance at the IWF World Cup was inspirational as she completed five clean lifts, with a total lift of 184kg. Although this was much below her personal best of 205 kg, it was a significant achievement considering her recent injury.

Chanu’s successful comeback has not only boosted her confidence but also secured her spot for the 2024 Paris Olympics. “It feels incredible to come back after an injury. Almost every lift I made today felt clean, clear, and powerful, and I’m leaving this competition feeling strong and confident,” Chanu said.

Her coach, Vijay Sharma, expressed his pride in Chanu’s performance. He acknowledged that their entire focus leading up to the event was solely on Chanu’s rehabilitation. Seeing her perform comfortably and confidently in her lifts made him proud of all the hard work they had done.

With her spot for the Paris Olympics almost secured, Chanu’s attention is now on making a mark at the Paris Olympics. “The goal was to secure my spot for the Paris Olympics, and now that I am almost through for the Paris Olympics, all my attention is on making a mark at the Paris Olympics,” Chanu said.
