"I feel he's going to be an all-format player for India pretty soon" - Rohit Sharma heaps praise on Tilak Varma after win over CSK

The five-time champions, after being the first side to be ruled out in the race for the playoffs, defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by five-wickets. With the loss, the defening champions, too are eliminated from sealing a top four spot.

Varma showed composure at the crease in a tricky run chase that saw the fall of early wickets. He anchored the chase and remained unbeaten at the end as the top scorer in the encounter at the Wankhede Stadium.

Skipper Rohit Sharma reserved praise for the youngster’s exploits in his maiden season. During the post-match presentation, he said:

“He (Tilak) has been brilliant, playing for the first year, having such a calm head is never easy. I feel he’s going to be an all-format player for India pretty soon. He’s got the technique and temperament. A lot of things are looking bright for him. And there’s hunger as well,”

The 19-year-old is among the top ten run-getters in the IPL 2022 with 368 runs in 12 matches at an average of 40.89. He has been the backbone of the MI batting unit which has suffered on the back of poor form by the top order batters.

Assessing the win over their arch-rivals, Sharma said:

“It was just about keeping calm and getting the job done. After losing those wickets at the start, we were a little calm and got the job done in the end. We have played a lot of cricket here. On so many occasions, we’ve had pitches like this.”

The skipper concluded:

It’s nice to get bowlers into the game as well at times. It’s been batting-friendly pitches all over, it was good to see bounce and swing from both sides which was good to watch.

Mi will face the Delhi Capitals and the Sunrisers Hyderabad in their final set of matches in the IPL 2022.
