Akash Kumar loses to Kazakh’s Makhmud Sabyrkhan in the World Boxing Championships; wins bronze

India’s campground at the AIBA’s Men’s World Boxing Championship ended on Thursday after Akash Kumar was defeated by Kazakh’s younster Makhmud Sabyrkhan in the semifinals. This was Akash’s first appearance at the World Boxing Championship and the debutante has already bagged a bronze for his country. The 21-year-old Akash has achieved a tremendous feat after becoming the seventh male boxer to have seized a medal for the homeland. The youngster was also awarded with a $25,000 cheque.

Akash showed promise in the beginning. His moves were powerful but after receiving repeated blow from the Kazakhstani, it was clear who was going to win the match. The game ended with the score 0-5. Makhmud is the reigning champion in his country and despite his young age, his moves showed that he was clinical in his approach.

Akash Kumar suffered a personal tragedy while participating in the national event

Akash was competiting in a national boxing championship when he lost his mother. His mother died from a lung infection. Born in a small village called Bhiwani, in Haryana, the youngster was introduced to boxing by his father and later trained at the Army Sports Institute in Pune. He has a brother who is currently serving in jail due to his link to a murder case.

Before progressing to the semifinals, Akash had to face Yoel Finol Rivas of Venezuela. Yoel is a former Olympic champion with a silver medal and upstaging him was not an easy feat but he did it to everyone’s surprise. His spectacular performance at the event has definately put him on everyone’s radar.

India had placed it’s hope on five other boxers who had qualified for the event which included bronze medallist Shiva Thapa and Asian Champion Sanjeet. But none of them managed to best their opponents to progress to the next level.
