The Indian fast bowler Akash Deep produced a dream spell on his debut for India in the absence of the senior counterpart Jasprit Bumrah. The Bihar-born cricketer rattled the English top order in the first session of the fourth test in Ranchi on Friday. Earlier in the day he received his test cap from the Wall of Cricket and the Indian Coach Rahul Dravid.
Who is Akash Deep? The bowler with an impressive debut
Much like senior pacers Mohammed Shami and Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep represents Bengal in domestic cricket but isn’t originally from that state. Son of a school teacher, Akash was born in the town of Dehri in Bihar’s Rohtas district on 15 December 1996 and moved to Bengal in 2010 where his uncle supported his ambition of becoming a cricketer after he faced multiple hurdles as a child.
Akash Deep got the English opener Zak Crawley with a peach of a delivery, uprooting the off stump, in his very second over. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a no-ball. However, he continued to bowl with a disciplined line and length, and some serious pace.
The paceman got Ben Duckett as his first victim in international cricket at 9.2 overs. Just 2 bowls later, he caught Ollipe Pope with an LBW. After missing out on getting Crawley’s wicket earlier, Akash cleaned him up this time in the 12th over.
With the help of a brutal bowling display from Akash Deep, India gained control over the match from an early stage. Though Jonny Bairstow got England into the BazBall phase, Ashwin succeded to get rid of him and later Jadeja trapped the Skipper Ben Stokes at the stroke of Lunch.
