Shubman Gill, the young and promising cricketer, has been making waves in the Indian cricket scene. Recently appointed as India’s vice-captain in white-ball formats, Gill’s leadership potential has caught the attention of selectors and fans alike.

Shubman Gill’s Rise in International Cricket

Gill is a three-format player, excelling in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. His adaptability across different formats showcases his cricketing acumen. As vice-captain, he will learn from experienced leaders like Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma, honing his leadership skills for the future.

Gill captained India to a convincing 4-1 series victory over Zimbabwe in the T20Is. Despite missing out on the T20 World Cup, his consistent performances have kept him in the spotlight.

In 2023, Gill had an outstanding year as an ODI batter. He led the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL), gaining valuable captaincy experience. During a challenging Test series against England, Gill demonstrated both his batting prowess and leadership skills.

Despite being part of a transitional team, he stepped up from a junior role to a senior position.

Ajit Agarkar, chairman of selectors, clarified the decision to appoint Gill. The absence of Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul, along with KL Rahul’s exclusion from T20Is, created an opportunity to groom Gill for future leadership. Agarkar emphasized the need to avoid sudden leadership changes due to injury or loss of form.

“Shubman is a guy we feel is a three-format player, firstly. And he seems to show a lot of good qualities over the last year or so. That’s why we wanted to have somebody who can also learn from a couple of senior guys who are there. Surya is there. Rohit is still around. We don’t face the same challenge again — suddenly try and look for a new captain in case there is an injury or loss of form. That’s the idea again. He has shown some decent leadership qualities. So we want him to get some experience and build going forward. There are no guarantees in life, but at this point, that’s how it looks,” Agarkar said.

Shubman Gill’s rise as vice-captain reflects the selectors’ belief in his potential. As he continues to learn from seasoned players, Gill may well be the captain India looks to in the years ahead.
