The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is taking significant steps to promote fair play and sportsmanship in Indian football. In response to a recent FIFA circular, the AIFF’s Refereeing Department has introduced a more rigorous “Code of Conduct – Participant Behaviour” that will apply across major tournaments in the upcoming season.
All you need to know about AIFF’s new Code of Conduct
The new code emphasizes professional behaviour both on and off the field. Players, coaches, officials, and fans are expected to maintain discipline, respect referees’ decisions, and avoid dissent.
This stricter enforcement will apply to prestigious competitions such as the Durand Cup, I-League, I-League 2, Super Cup, and the Indian Super League (ISL).
The team captain acts as a bridge between players and referees. Only the captain can respectfully approach the referee for clarifications on calls. Other players risk a caution for dissent if they do so.

Only authorized senior members of the technical staff in the designated area can request explanations from the fourth official regarding officiating decisions. Any player seeking an explanation directly from the referee or fourth official will face dissent penalties.
These stern rules promote sportsmanship, improve communication, and enhance player safety. Consistent enforcement fosters a respectful and disciplined environment for players and referees alike.
