The All India Chess Federation (AICF) is actively exploring the possibility of bidding for the prestigious FIDE World Championship match between India’s rising star, D. Gukesh, and the reigning champion, Ding Liren of China. Gukesh, the 17-year-old prodigy from Chennai, made history by qualifying for the grand finale after his remarkable victory in the Candidates Tournament held in Toronto.

“We are internally assessing everything required to bid for it — understanding things like logistics, commercials and everything. Once we have a deeper understanding and a huge clarity on the dynamics, then we will be able to take a call,” AICF President Nitin Narang said.

AICF’s bidding procedure to host World Championship

  1. Bid Assessment: The AICF is internally assessing all necessary aspects to make an informed decision. This includes evaluating logistics, commercial considerations, and other dynamics related to hosting the championship match. A deeper understanding of these factors will guide their final decision.
  2. Host City: The choice of the host city will be determined once the AICF has clarity on whether to proceed with the bidding process. The AICF aims to ensure that the best possible conditions are provided for this high-stakes chess encounter.
  3. Bidding Criteria: FIDE (the International Chess Federation) has outlined specific criteria for prospective bidders. These include a budget of USD 8.5 million (approximately Rs 71 crore) and a facilitation fee of USD 1.1 million (approximately Rs 9 crore). The AICF has until May 31 to submit its bid, and FIDE will announce the host city on July 1.
  4. Prize Money: FIDE has earmarked an overall prize money pool of USD 2.5 million (approximately Rs 21 crore), an increase from the USD 2 million (approximately Rs 17 crore) offered in 2023. The World Championship match is tentatively scheduled to take place between November 20 and December 15.

Gukesh’s victory in the Candidates Tournament not only secured his place in the grand finale but also set new records. He became the youngest player ever to win the Candidates, surpassing the legendary Russian player, Garry Kasparov. Additionally, he is now the youngest qualifier for the World Championship.

India’s chess community eagerly awaits the outcome of the AICF’s bid. If successful, hosting the World Championship would be a momentous occasion for Indian chess enthusiasts, as they witness the clash of these two exceptional talents on the global stage.
