The Chennai Super Kings (CSK), one of the most successful franchises in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), are gearing up for the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. The team’s performance in the 2024 season was not up to their usual standards, and they finished outside the top four. Despite this setback, the franchise is looking forward to rebuilding and coming back stronger in the next season.
Possible Retention Players for CSK in IPL 2025
The IPL 2025 auction will be a mega auction, similar to the one in 2022. In the previous mega auction, CSK had retained MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Moeen Ali. This time around, the franchise faces some tough decisions regarding player retention.
- Ruturaj Gaikwad: Gaikwad, who took over the captaincy from MS Dhoni just before the start of the 2024 season, is likely to be the first player that CSK will retain. Despite some criticism of his decisions as a captain, his batting form has been good, and the franchise is expected to back him as their captain for the next few seasons.

- Ravindra Jadeja: Jadeja, with his all-round abilities, is a valuable asset to any team. His contributions with both bat and ball make him a likely candidate for retention. He proved his worth over the years for the franchise and CSK would be backing him to do the same for the next few years.

- MS Dhoni/Shivam Dube: The future of MS Dhoni, the former captain and an integral part of CSK, is uncertain. If Dhoni is fit and keen to play, it would be a no-brainer for CSK to retain him. However, if he decides to retire or take up a different role within the franchise, this would free up a spot for another player.

- Shivam Dube is one player whom CSK might target if MS calls it quits from the IPL. Though the all-rounder didn’t get to showcase his bowling skills in IPL 2024, his six-hitting abilities and scoring big runs are a great surplus for any team.

- Matheesha Pathirana: Known as ‘Baby Malinga’, Pathirana, the promising young player from Sri Lanka, could be the fourth retention for CSK. His toe-crushing yorkers and slinging action are a huge bonus for the team to pick wickets in the middle phase, especially during the death overs.

These decisions are not set in stone, as the franchise owners have reportedly requested the BCCI to allow each team up to 8 retentions. If this request is granted, CSK may have the opportunity to retain more players from their current squad.
The franchises might also use the Right-to-Match(RTM) card to retain the players during the auction. If this continues, then CSK might go for their overseas stars in the likes of Devon Conway.
The final decision on player retention will be a strategic one, taking into account the team’s performance, player form, and the dynamics of the mega auction. Regardless of the outcome, fans of the franchise can look forward to an exciting and competitive IPL 2025 season.
