Jonathan Trott, the head coach of the Afghanistan cricket team, believes that exposure to the Indian Premier League (IPL) and other franchise tournaments has significantly contributed to the growth of Afghanistan cricket.
The Afghans have had an impressive run in the T20 World Cup 2024, already securing their place in the Super 8 with three consecutive wins. Trott emphasized that playing in domestic leagues worldwide, including the IPL, has positively impacted the players.

Trott said he notices changes in the players whenever they return from playing in domestic leagues around the world. Trott expressed his thoughts prior to Afghanistan’s last Group C match against the West Indies on Tuesday, June 18 at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia.
“Well, I think the more exposure players have got to the IPL and different franchises where there’s pressure all the time in this format of the game, I think that’ll only do us well and serve us well going forward. I know that the players – and we had a lot of players at the IPL every time they come back, I can see a little bit of a difference or a change every time they go away to franchise good and bad changes,” Trott said in the pre-match press conference.

Notably, Afghanistan’s cricketers, such as Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Noor Ahmad, have gained valuable experience through their participation in these high-pressure tournaments. As they prepare for the Super 8, Trott and his team aim to maintain their unbeaten streak and finish the group stage on top of the table.
