Afghanistan’s cricket team, led by skipper Rashid Khan, achieved a historic milestone by reaching the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup. Their thrilling victory against Bangladesh on June 25, 2024, secured their place in the final four. But what makes this achievement even more remarkable is the backstory involving West Indian batting legend Brian Lara

Rashid Khan reveals Brian Lara’s prediction before the tournament

Before the tournament began, Lara boldly predicted that Afghanistan would make it to the semi-finals. His faith in the Afghan team stood out, especially when most others didn’t consider them serious contenders. And as fate would have it, Lara’s prediction turned out to be spot-on.

At a welcome party, Rashid Khan had a conversation with Lara. He assured the cricket legend that Afghanistan wouldn’t let him down. They made a promise: they would prove him right. And they did just that.

“I think the only guy who put us in the semifinal was Brian Lara. I think we proved that right. That’s what we discussed before the competition at a welcome party. I told him we won’t let you down. We would make it., prove it that you are right. So I think that that’s something everyone is so proud of and are proud of this team,” said Rashid.

The belief in their abilities grew after defeating New Zealand. Rashid described the semi-final qualification as a dream come true for the team. Their remarkable achievement resonated with fans back home, who celebrated this historic moment.

“Well, it’s something like a dream for us as a team. Being in the semi-finals, I think, it’s all about the way we have started the thing, uh, the tournament. And, uh, the belief came while we beat New Zealand. So it’s unbelievable. I don’t have any words to describe my feelings. Definitely, back home, everyone is so, so happy for this big achievement for us being in the semi-final,” said Rashid.

Afghanistan now faces South Africa in the semi-finals in Trinidad at Brian Lara Cricket Stadium. It is expected that the great man will back the Afghans in his home ground against the Proteas.
