Indian weightlifter Achinta Sheuli bagged a silver medal in the men’s 73kg category at the IWF Junior World Weightlifting Championships on Wednesday at Tashkent, as well as broke three national records.

At the gold level qualifying event for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics hosted in the capital city of Uzbekistan, Sheuli lifted a total of 313 kgs, 141kg in snatch and then 172kg in clean and jerk, smashing his previous personal best of 309kg (139kg+170kg) at the Asian Championships last month.

The 313 kg lift in total and the 141 kg in snatch are new national records set by Sheuli, which broke the previous records, set by N. Ajith at the National championships in Kolkata last year, of 310 kg and 140 kg respectively.

Moreover, Sheuli also broke the previous national clean and jerk record of 170 kg, set by himself at the Asian junior championships in Pyongyang in 2019, upping it to 172 kg this time.

The 19-year-old, who is a Commonwealth Championship gold medallist, started with a 137 kg lift in snatch, and after failing in his second attempt, was able to lift 141 kg in third. His 172 kg clean and jerk lift came after his first and second attempts of 166 kg and 169 kg.

“It feels good to get a medal. I will go back and train as my next target is to qualify and do well in the Commonwealth Games next year,” Sheuli, who hails from Howrah in West Bengal, said in an interview with Sportstar, “I will just follow the coaches’ advice and try to improve as much as I can.”

Sheuli, who is a Havildar in the Indian Army, was congratulated by the organisation after his spectacular feat.

Juniansyah Rizki of Indonesia clinched the gold yesterday, with a combined lift of 349kg (155 kg in snatch,194 kg in clean and jerk) as well as broke the junior world record in all three events. Russian lifter Serobian Gevorg bagged the bronze with lifting 143 kg in snatch and 165 kg in clean and jerk, combining 308 kg.
