India’s sole individual gold medallist Abhinav Bindra hopes that India can break their six-medal record set at the London Olympics. The 10m air rifle world champion added that the prospect of overhauling the current medal tally is realistic.
Despite the challenging times due to the constant presence of the dreaded coronavirus, Bindra believes that the Indian contingent will be up for the challenge to deliver the medals for the nation.
“I think each one of them has the ability to do their best, they have proved themselves in the last two-three years,”
“There are definite medal hopes not just in shooting but across other disciplines as well. We have many people who can be considered as realistic medal hopes going into Tokyo. But a lot also depends on that particular day,” he said
The former athlete, who is now an entrepreneur following the conclusion of the 2016 Rio Olympics, revealed how he made the challenging transition of fields after ending his sporting career.
“As an athlete, you have to be very adaptable to changing situations, these are very useful in business as well,” he said while speaking on his transition from a sportsman to an entrepreneur.
He is currently the CEO of Abhinav Futuristics Private Limited, which aims to bring science into the world of sport and healthcare.
“The other thing that is very important is acceptance. Sometimes we have to learn how to accept and move on as soon as possible. As you do that your mind opens, it opens up to look at solutions rather than whining. The mind is then very positive. But it is easier said than done.” he added
Bindra followed up by speaking about the current state of the sport of shooting in the county during the webinar organised by Merchants’ Chambers of Commerce & Industry. The 38-year-old had won the gold medal for India in the 10m air pistol event in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
“Shooting is now dominated by youngsters but when I was growing up, I was competing with older and experienced people who were double or triple our age. I don’t think it was a challenge but it was an interesting dynamic,” Bindra said
