Abhimanyu Easwaran Pushes for India Call-Up with Brisk Hundred in Irani Cup

Abhimanyu Easwaran, the talented Bengal opener, has once again showcased his prowess with the bat, making a compelling case for his inclusion in the Indian Test squad. His recent performance in the Irani Cup, where he scored a brisk hundred for the Rest of India against Mumbai, has caught the attention of selectors and cricket enthusiasts alike.

A Stellar Performance from Abhimanyu Easwaran

Easwaran’s hundred came off just 117 balls, a testament to his aggressive yet controlled batting style. This innings was his third successive hundred in first-class cricket, highlighting his consistent form and ability to perform under pressure. Opening the batting, Easwaran led Rest of India’s strong reply to Mumbai’s mammoth first-innings total of 537, showcasing his resilience and skill.

Consistent Domestic Form

Easwaran’s performance in the Irani Cup is not an isolated incident. He has been in sublime form throughout the domestic season. In the Duleep Trophy, he scored 157 not out for India B against India C and followed it up with 116 for India B against India D

Despite his impressive domestic record, Easwaran has found it challenging to break into the national team. He was part of India’s Test squad during their tour of South Africa in 2023-24 but did not get a chance to play. However, his recent performances have reignited the debate about his potential inclusion in the Test squad, especially with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia on the horizon.

Easwaran is in a three-way race with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sai Sudharsan for a spot as India’s backup Test opener. While Gaikwad and Sudharsan have also shown promise, Easwaran’s consistent run-scoring ability and experience in first-class cricket give him an edge. His 26th first-class hundred in the Irani Cup is a timely reminder of his skills and readiness for the highest level.
