Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the legendary wicket-keeper batter and captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has been likened to a “diesel engine that never ends” by former South Africa captain AB de Villiers.

Dhoni’s longevity in the sport, particularly in the IPL, has been a subject of awe and admiration. Despite speculations about his retirement, Dhoni continues to play at the highest level, leading CSK for the record 15th season during IPL 2024. His leadership and performance have been instrumental in CSK’s success, including winning a record-equalling fifth title last year.

“He just seems to be this diesel engine that never ends,” says AB de Villiers on MS Dhoni

AB de Villiers, in his YouTube show, expressed his admiration for Dhoni’s resilience and commitment to the sport. He said, “There were a lot of rumours about MS Dhoni finishing up last year; that was not the case, ladies and gentlemen. He would be back again. Will this be his final season? No one knows. He just seems to be this diesel engine that never ends. He keeps running. What an incredible player, what an incredible captain”.

Dhoni’s commitment to the sport is evident in his decision to undergo knee surgery to get fit in time for IPL 2024. Despite dealing with a dodgy knee throughout the IPL 2023 season, Dhoni led CSK to a record-equalling fifth IPL crown. After winning the IPL 2023 title, Dhoni underwent arthroscopy, a minimally invasive keyhole surgery, on his knee on June 1st, 2023. The surgery, performed by renowned sports orthopaedic surgeon Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, was successful, setting Dhoni on the path to recovery.

AB de Villiers also highlighted the importance of Dhoni’s leadership in CSK’s success. He said, “I believe it’s through their presence, it’s through the leadership of MSD, a calm coach in Stephen Fleming, senior players in Ravindra Jadeja and others who have really set this incredible culture alive. They are a very intimidating team to play against. They are never easy to beat. That is always a great characteristic of a very successful unit, of a very successful franchise,” he added.

Chennai Super Kings will open their campaign on March 22 against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
