In the annals of cricketing history, few players have left as indelible a mark as Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Known for his unorthodox style and fearless approach, MS Dhoni’s journey from a small-town boy to a cricketing legend is filled with remarkable moments one such moment, vividly recalled by former India cricketer Aakash Chopra, occurred during an India A tour in 2004, when Dhoni’s audacious shot left everyone, including Chopra, stunned.
The Setting: India A Tour in 2004
In 2004, Aakash Chopra and MS Dhoni were part of the India A team touring Kenya and Zimbabwe. This tour was crucial for many young players aspiring to make their mark and secure a place in the national team. Dhoni, relatively unknown at the time, was one of these hopefuls. Chopra, who was already an established player, shared a room with Dhoni and witnessed firsthand the raw talent and audacity that would soon make Dhoni a household name.
MS Dhoni’s Audacious Shot
Chopra recalls a particular instance during a match against Pakistan A, where Dhoni’s fearless batting left a lasting impression. Facing the experienced Pakistani fast bowler Iftikhar Anjum, who was known for his pace and had already played international cricket, Dhoni did something unexpected. “Dhoni played an audacious reverse sweep against Iftikhar Anjum, who used to bowl at 140+ kmph. He hit him for a four at fine leg. The bowler changed his field, sent back the fine leg fielder, and called in the one at third man, but Dhoni smashed the next ball for a six over the third man region. I was like, ‘Who is this guy?’” Chopra recounted.
A Different Dhoni
Chopra described Dhoni as “carefree but not careless.” He was confident and happy with where he was, yet he took his opportunities seriously. During the Kenya Triangular tournament, Dhoni batted like a man possessed, finishing as the highest run-scorer with 362 runs from six innings at an average of 72.40 and a strike rate of 90.15. His performances were instrumental in catching the selectors’ eyes and paving the way for his debut in the Indian national team later that year.
The Humble Competitor
Despite his burgeoning talent, Dhoni remained humble and grounded. Chopra shared an anecdote that highlighted Dhoni’s character. “He never used to bat in the nets. Instead, he would bowl to Dinesh Karthik, his competitor for the wicketkeeper’s spot. When I asked him why he wasn’t batting, he replied, ‘No, I just want to bowl because I’m enjoying it.’ He was just talented. In fact, he does not practice keeping that much, but his hands are faster than anyone in the world even now,” Chopra said.
