The fifth Test between India and England which was scheduled to commence today, has been cancelled by the England and Wales Cricket Board. ECB confirmed this news as India were unable to field a team due to a number of Covid cases in the camp.

“Following ongoing conversations with the BCCI, the ECB can confirm that the fifth LV= Insurance Test between England and India Men due to start today at Emirates Old Trafford, will be cancelled,” ECB said in a media statement.

“Due to fears of a further increase in the number of COVID cases inside the camp, India are regrettably unable to field a team,” the statement further read.

Uncertainty surrounded the fifth test after assistant physio Yogesh Parmar tested positive. As a result, the Indian team’s practice session on Thursday was cancelled. There was no press conference conducted on the eve of the test either.

But the last thing England could do is to write India off: Hussain.

However, according to a report in PTI, all players returned a negative report on Friday morning. This increased the chances of the match at Old Trafford going ahead even though concerns remain.

However, according to the report, a senior player was reluctant as he was concerned about the situation becoming worse if a playing member tested positive on one of the match days.

Even BCCI President Sourav Ganguly voiced his concern over the issue. “We don’t know if a match will happen at the moment. Hopefully we can get some game,” said Ganguly at the book launch of ‘Mission Domination’ in Kolkata as a part of Tata Literature Festival.

The Indian Team suffered a setback during the fourth Test as the Head coach Ravi Shastri was tested positive. Bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar were isolated as they were in close contact with Shastri. As a result, they couldn’t take part in the fifth test.

India leads the five match series 2-1. It is to be seen whether India will be crowned as the winners of the series or as per rumors going around that this result will be considered a forfeit by India.
