The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The tournament will be hosted in the West Indies and the USA.

The squad looks stronger as India opted to reward the IPL performers with the backup of International experience. However, few cricket fans were left disappointed with the exclusion of young talent who took the IPL by storm so far in the current season.

Here’s the list of 5 young Indian players who failed to make it to the T20 World Cup squad

  1. Abhishek Sharma

The dashing Sunrisers Opener has been in excellent form. Opening the batting along with Travis Head, Abhishek took his side to breathtaking starts. In 9 matches so far, he scored 303 runs at an impressive strike rate of 214.89(best in the season). He was one of the favourites before the squad announcement considering his batting exploits that were needed at the start of the innings.

2. Shashank Singh

Shashank Singh, a rising star in Indian cricket, has been the talk of the town following his fiery performances in the IPL. His breathtaking performance of 68 runs in just 28 balls against KKR, which helped PBKS achieve an impossible target of 262 runs, has been particularly noteworthy. Despite his aggressive batting skills and a strike rate of 182.64 in the IPL, Shashank Singh unfortunately missed out on being selected for the T20 World Cup.

3. Ashutosh Sharma

Ashutosh Sharma made a significant impact in the 2023 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy by breaking Yuvraj Singh’s record for the fastest fifty by an Indian in T20 cricket. His aggressive approach and remarkable finishing skills prompted the Punjab Kings to have him on board for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

Despite his consistent run in the IPL 2024, Ashutosh Sharma missed out on the selection for the T20 World Cup squad. His late-order firepower and ability to thrive under pressure were noteworthy, especially his 28-ball 61 against Mumbai Indians. However, the selectors had other finishers in mind for the biennial ICC event.

4. Mayank Yadav

Mayank Yadav, the young fast bowler from Lucknow Super Giants, has been a sensation in IPL 2024. His express speed and disciplined bowling performances have left both experts and fans impressed. He took six wickets in three matches before suffering a side strain. His fastest delivery of IPL 2024 clocked at a rapid 156.7 kmph.

However, Mayank suffered an injury that kept him out of action after those initial couple of games. Little game time and injury concerns couldn’t provide an opportunity to prove his worth before the squad announcement.

5. Dhruv Jurel

Dhruv Jurel, a promising wicketkeeper-batsman, has unfortunately missed out on a spot in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup 2024. Despite his impressive performance in the IPL 2024, where he scored a quickfire 52* off 34 balls for Rajasthan Royals against Lucknow Super Giants, Jurel couldn’t secure a place in the team.

There was stiff competition for the wicketkeeper role ahead of the squad announcement with as many as 8 players contending for the spot. However, the management went with Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson, who displayed their incredible batting skills along with exceptional glove work.
