5 reasons why New Zealand are favorites to win the WTC Final

78

We are finally concluding the World Test Championship, with the Final between India and New Zealand from 18 June 2021 in Ageas Bowl, Southampton. Both teams deservingly qualified for the final as they played with more quality and dominance when compared to others. But there can be only one winner.

Hoping that we have a complete game without any rain interruptions (fingers crossed), New Zealand may have the edge over India in the final due to various reasons. If you are an Indian fan, you might want to skip this one.

Here are five reasons explaining why New Zealand have the edge over India:

5. More depth in fast bowling resources:

New Zealand has the most diverse fast bowling attack in the world. Their pace battery, comprising of Trent Boult, Neil Wagner, Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson, is a force to be reckoned with. These bowlers can easily dismantle any batting side. Nevertheless, they can be more lethal in English conditions, which favors fast bowling.

2. Better suited to English conditions:

Conditions prevailing in England and New Zealand are somewhat similar. Hence, Kiwis will get accustomed to these conditions quickly. Also, they are playing a test series against England before the final, giving them essential game time, which is gold dust for any team before a big match.

3. Indian batsmen struggle in English conditions:

Indian batters no longer struggle against pace and bounce. However, there are still question marks over their competence to swing and seam. Except for Virat Kohli, none of the batsmen could score runs consistently in England during their previous tour. Early last year, they were outplayed by New Zealand inseam and swinging conditions.

2. New Zealand have a winning momentum:

New Zealand were unstoppable during their home games against India, Pakistan and West Indies. They whitewashed all their opponents in the most extended format. Kiwis were able to win all their games without breaking a sweat. It’s safe to say they will reach the final high on confidence. This momentum may help them go all the way.

1. New Zealand’s edge over India in recent world events:

The last time India beat New Zealand in an ICC event was way back in World Cup 2003. Since then, they have lost twice in World T20 (2007, 2016) and once in World Cup (2019). India has never beaten New Zealand in a knockout game. They lost in the finals of Champions Trophy 2000 and the semi-final of World Cup 2019. These stats will certainly provide confidence to Kane and his men.
