The year of 2019 is almost over, and looking back at the past 12 months in the sport of cricket, there has been several mouth watering ODI innings from batsmen all over the world. As the year bids goodbye, we, Sports India, are doing a listicle of our favourite 5 best in the One Day International format.
Thisara Perera 140 versus New Zealand
Sri Lanka’s beginning of 2019 started with a disappointing 3-0 series defeat against New Zealand. However, the second day of the ODI series saw a breathtaking spell by Thisara Perera. Despite unable to chase down the gigantic target of 320 set by the hosts at the Bay Oval, Perera gifted a mouth watering knock of 140 runs off just 74 balls, with a ravishing 8 fours and 13 sixes, which took the Lions to 298.This was also the 30 year old’s maiden century in the ODI format. Ben Stokes, 84* versus New Zealand
Taking a look back at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, the unforgettable performance of Ben Stokes against New Zealand in the final at Lord’s Cricket Ground. The decisive innings of 84 not out from 98 balls by the English international, consisting of 5 fours and 2 sixes, helped the hosts tie the monumental 241 made by the Black Caps. England went onto win the match at super over, and Stokes was named player of the match. Eoin Morgan 148 versus Afghanistan
Another memorable knock from the Cricket World Cup, this time by the hosts skipper Eoin Morgan himself. In the game against Afghanistan, the audience of the Old Trafford Cricket Ground were left in awe as the Morgan gifted an astounding 148 runs made from just 71 balls. How? Along with 4 boundaries, the 33 year old veteran sent the ball over the boundary rope for a jaw-dropping, world-record-breaking 17 times! Result? A colossal overall of 397 runs. Shimron Hetmyer 104* versus England
After a loss on the first day of the England series, West Indies managed to stack a gigantic 289 runs. The driving force behind the innings was the young Shimron Hetmyer, and the 23 year old’s marvellous 104 runs off just 83 balls, with 7 fours and 4 sixes. Windies successfully secured the victory on the second day at the Kensington Oval Barbados, as England finished 263 all out. Rohit Sharma 159 versus West Indies
Men in Blues opener Rohit Sharma is ending 2019 as the player with the highest ODI runs. A total of 1490 runs from 28 ODI matches, with an average of 53.21 runs, the Mumbai Indians skipper’s fresh memories against the Windies in this month’s ODI series is a remarkable one. Despite the loss on the first day, the hosts won the second match at ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, thanks to a a blistering 159 off 139, with 17 fours and 5 sixes from the vice captain.
