The 44th edition of the Chess Olympiad, the biggest event of the game featuring the elites, is set to take place in the city of Chennai between July and August this year. The Olympiad was originally set to take place in Russia, but following the country’s invasion into Ukraine and the subsequent war that is ongoing, the World Chess Federation (FIDE) had decided to shift the event away.
Soon after FIDE’s decision, on 25th February, India had pitched in with a bid to host the 44th edition of the biennial event and this Wednesday, the decision has been made official that the event will take place in the capital of Tamil Nadu. The State Govt is prepping to make it a triumphant event, along with guaranteeing Rs. 75 crore to the federation as part of the AICF’s (All India Chess Federation) bid.
“Delighted that the Chess Capital of India is set to host the 44th Chess Olympiad!” said M. K. Stalin, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu following the announcement, “A proud moment for Tamil Nadu! Chennai warmly welcomes all the Kings and Queens from around the world!”
The Convention Hall of the Four Points by Sheraton located on the Old Mahabalipuram Road has been picked as the venue by FIDE. As hosts, India will automatically be able to field two teams in each section, as well as a third team given there are odd-numbered entries.
“As a World champion from my country, being a host to one of the top chess events in the chess calendar is a sense of personal pride,” said the Indian chess maestro Vishwanathan Anand, “India has hosted many world-class events, and by hosting the Olympiad, we would have hosted all the important chess events in our country. This will add to our stature as one of the foremost countries in chess talent and chess organization.”
