41-year-old cricketer Arshad Basheer went into concussion during a community cricket match after he was punched. The incident took place in Auckland on Saturday, March 20 when Basheer was bowling for the Suburbs New Lynn Cricket Club during the game at the Lloyd Elsmore Park in Pakuranga and he was left with a bruised nose after getting hit on the face.
There was a disagreement too regarding the delivery as to whether the balls that were referred to as wide were actually wide. After that, Basheer cited “please don’t cheat” to the opponent player from the Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club. Arshad Basheer also mentioned that the player came up to him and asked him to say whatever he said and then he smashed into his face. Meanwhile, after getting hit, he suddenly collapsed on the ground and lost the sense for a few minutes too.
“He held my neck in both hands, I tried to escape and the next minute he punched me,” Arshad Basheer was quoted as saying in stuff.co.nz. He later shared everything with the police. On the other hand, he is a taxi-driver and the incident left him with no choice but to sacrifice an evening from his job from where he earns between $200 and $300.
A spokesperson said that investigations are going on, but no arrests have been made so far. Meanwhile, Basheer wants the player “banned” and referred to his behaviour as “unacceptable”.
The community cricket manager for Auckland Cricket, Dean Bartlett has said that the board has spoken to both the clubs on the incident. He further added that Auckland Cricket will help the police with the investigations as well.
“It is our understanding that one player has been internally stood down by their club indefinitely, therefore will take no part in the rest of the season. Once the matter is closed by the police, we will action our judicial process, which will involve a Full Hearing conducted by the Auckland Cricket Judicial Panel,” he stated.
On the other hand, Francis Scordino, the Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club manager, has said, “I’m sure there will be two sides to what happened.”
