4 Indian boxers soar into ASBC Youth and Junior Boxing Championships semifinals

A quadruple of Indian boxers have made their way into the semifinal of the ongoing ASBC Youth and Junior Boxing Championships hosted in Dubai, assuring medals for the country.

The Asian Championships mark the return of international youth and junior competitions after a prolonged hiatus of two years due to the prevalence of the COVID-19 pandemic, giving the youngsters some necessary competitive action.

Vishvanath Suresh (48kg), Vanshraj (64kg), Daksh Singh (67kg) and Jaydeep Rawat (71kg) are the four pugilists who secured wins in the quarterfinals stage on the fourth day of the championships to enter the last four.

The first win for India was registered by Vishvanath, who dominated Zholbborosov Amantur of Kyrgyzstan in the men’s 48kg quarterfinal, securing a clean 5-0 victory with showing superb power and remarkable tactics.

Another 5-0 whitewash was achieved by Vanshaj in the men’s 64kg quarterfinals against Makhkamov Dovud of Tajikistan. Meanwhile, a Referee Stopping the Contest (RSC) was awarded to Jaydeep in the second round of his 71kg showdown against Eissa Mohammed Alkurdi.

It was only Daksh who had the toughest fight out of all four, as his 67kg opposition Turdubaev Eldar proved to be a resilient combatant. Nonetheless, Daksh was able to pick up a 4-1 split decision win.

On the other hand, the day was not favourable for Victor Shaikhom Singh (54kg), Vijay Singh (57kg) and Rabichandra Singh (60kg) in their respective quarterfinal matches as all three of them suffered defeats, ending their campaign.

The fifth day of the championships will see a total of seven Indian junior boxers, including four girls and three boys, compete to secure a spot in the final round, with both the junior and youth age group pugilists competing together for the first time.

Muskan (46kg), Devika Ghorpade (50kg), Aarzoo (54kg) and Supriya Rawat (66kg) are the four junior girls, while the boys counterpart will see Rohit Chamoli (48kg), Ankush (66kg) and Bharat Joon (+81kg) in action in the semis.
