The ongoing season of the coveted Dakar Rally, which commenced with its prologue on 5th January, has wrapped up with its Special Stage 1, followed by Stage 2.

Lets look at the performances and results of the Indian teams and drivers with the conclusion of the special stage and Stage 2 of the 2024 Dakar Rally taking place in Saudi Arabia.

Special Stage 1: Ross Branch Earns A Victory For Hero in the Dakar Rally

The highlight of the Special Stage 1, which took place on 6th January, covering 414 km between Al-Ula and Al Henakiyah, was the display of sportsmanship from Ross Branch, the Botswanan who rides for Hero Motorsport. Aside from showcasing his dexterity on the two wheels, Branch showed his righteous side even during the toughest leg of the race when he helped Tosha Schareina, the winner of the prologue.

The Honda-riding Spaniard had suffered a crash during the special stage, but Branch had come to his rescue by stopping his race and jumping off his Hero. Although it costed him the podium finish at start and Branch eventually finished 16th, which was 16 minutes and 10 seconds behind the provisional leader Ricky Brabec, the act of being a good samaritan earned Branch a 25 minute deduction- the time he spent in assisting Scharina.

Harith Noah Finishes 21st but Ashish Raorane suffers crash

Sherco TVS Rally Factory’s Harith Noah, one of the two Indians among the 140 riders, battled against headache and cramps during the special stage to finish 21st, an 8-position improvement from his prologue finish at 29th.

His fellow Indian rider Ashish Raorane, who rides for Xraids Experience, met an unfortunate incident during the race. The Pune based rider suffered a crash, suffering a fracture to his collarbone. While he did manage to finish the race, the accident rendered Raorane unable to continue and has withdrawn from 2024 Dakar Rally.

Stage 2: Buhler finishes 4th, Branch retains top spot, Noah climbs to 20th

Stage 2 of the 2024 Dakar Rally on 7th January, which took place through 463 km mixture of sandy dunes and followed by fast-paced stretches lying between Al Henakiyah to Al Duwadimi.

It was a satisfying day for Hero Motorsport, with Sebastian Buhler coming in fourth place- 6 minute and 47 seconds behind the winner of the stage Monster Energy Honda’s Jose Cornejo.

Branch, the winner of the special stage 1, had a not so fruitful day at the office on the second stage, finishing in 11th stage. However, the Botswanan rider was able to maintain the top spot in the overall rankings, 02 minutes and 55 seconds ahead of Cornejo.

Hero’s third rider, Joan Barreda Bort, finished 17th, 17 minutes behind the winner, and has now moved up to 13th overall ranking, one spot above Buhler at 14th.
