The 2018 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship began today at New Delhi. However, the Indian contingent will be action from tomorrow with Mary Kom leading the charge. India last hosted the tournament at 2006 when they topped the table with 4 gold medals.
Here are the 10 Indian boxers that would be representing the nation and all you need to know about them.
MC Mary Kom (48 kg)
The Olympic bronze-medallist has already won five World titles and will be eyeing her sixth World Championship gold.
Pinki Rani Jangra (51kg)
Pinki Jagra is most notably known for ousting Mary Kom in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the 51kg category. She went on to win bronze for the country at the event and was a quarterfinalist at the 2014 edition of the tournament.
Manisha Moun (54kg)
Manisha Moun was introduced to the game only at 2012, but her opponents can’t take her lightly in the bantamweight category.
Sonia Lather (57kg)
At the 2016 edition of the Women’s World Boxing Championships, Sonia stumbled at the final hurdle and picked up the silver medal. This time, she will settle for nothing but gold.
Laishram Sarita Devi (60kg)
Most of the boxing fans will recognize her as the one who refused to accept her bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games. However, Sarita Devi is more than that as she won gold when India hosted the event in 2006.
Simranjit Kaur (64kg)
Simranjit won bronze for India at the 2013 World Youth Championships in the 60 kg category. She has upgraded to the 64kg category and will be raring to bag a medal at that.
Lovlina Borgohian (69kg)
Lovlina initially wanted to be a kickboxer. But, she gained more traction in the boxing world and even won a gold medal at the Indian Open held earlier this year.
Saweety Boora (75kg)
Like the previous name, Saweety too began her sporting career by playing a different sport- kabaddi. But, she switched to boxing and won the silver at the 2014 World Championships.
Bhagyabati Kachari (81kg)
Moving on to the heavyweights, India will be represented by Bhagyawati Kachari who won bronze at the 2012 Asian Boxing Women’s Boxing Championships
Seema Poonia (81+kg)
The last but not the least, Seema Poonia will represent India at the super-heavyweight category. She won bronze for India at the 2017 Asian Boxing Championships.
