10 female wrestlers including Geeta Phogat and Nisha Dahiya excluded from Asian Championship trials

A group of ten female wrestlers, which includes India’s first ever Commonwealth Games gold medallist and female Olympian wrestler Geeta Phogat, along with U-23 World Championship bronze medallist Nisha Dahiya, have been barred by the Wrestling Federation of India from taking part in the trials of the upcoming Senior Asian Wrestling Championships 2022.

The decision bears a strong sense of intolerance towards indisciplinary behaviours, as all the barred wrestlers, including Geeta and Nisha, had either failed to report to for the national camp in Lucknow which began on 9th February or left the camp within just two days.

Geeta Phogat, the country’s first grappler to clinch a gold at the CWG and first female wrestler from India to earn a berth at the Olympics, cited an injury as her decision to be absent from the camp.

Nisha Dahiya, who was recently on the headlines linked to fake news of her murder in Haryana, made a request to the WFI to grant her participation, but the governing body did not change their decision.

“We will ask for an explanation from the wrestlers why are they not taking national camp seriously. Missing out on a chance to compete in a tournament like Asian Championship will certainly teach them a lesson,” Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the President of the WFI spoke to PTI during the men’s trials at the IG stadium, “Our second line is pretty strong, so we can take these tough steps to ensure discipline at the national camp. We don’t want to hurt chances of good wrestlers but they need to understand that they can’t take things for granted.”

The trials of the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships 2022 is set to take place this Friday at the SAI Centre in Lucknow, while the actual tournament will be held in Mongolia from 29th to 24th April.
